Jessica and I plan a backwoods cabin getaway at the end of a short hike through snow north of Idaho City. It’s only two days after hernia surgery but I figure I can walk slowly. I didn’t anticipate needing to chop wood.

Jessica wasn’t sure if hernia surgery would be compatible with our weekend plan for a short hike into Beaver Creek Cabin.¹ I figured it would be fine.

I had never experienced general anesthesia. It was odd that I remembered talking in the preparation room then I was here in what seemed the same moment.

I was sore the first day after surgery but a couple days later I was ready to hike.

During the winter, Beaver Creek Cabin lodgers must park at the WhoopEmUp lot and walk the 1½ mile trail which goes along the edge of the highway for a bit.

The cabin was cute if a bit musty. It has separate bedrooms and kitchen but we decided to close those doors and remain in the living room with the fire.

The walk in warmed us up enough we didn’t realize it was cold for a while. There was a small cardboard box of wood next to the stove and a key to open the shed outside to chop more out of the large rounds piled there.

During the winter, there is no water or electricity at the cabin. It was nice to have this light.

There were a couple bedrooms but pulling the futon near the fire for the night seemed cozier. I tried to keep the fire burning through the night but it was still quite cold in the morning.
